About the Role:

Ecojustice is looking for a seasoned government relations specialist to join our climate team in British Columbia and help us build the case for world class-climate legislation that:

  • Holds government and polluters accountable for achieving climate targets;
  • Strengthens the role of the public, politicians, and independent experts in overseeing progress; and
  • Puts B.C on the path to achieving the aims of the Paris Agreement.

Climate change affects all British Columbians. With the provincial government having committed to improving B.C’s climate accountability framework, the next year presents a unique and time-limited opportunity to secure reform of B.C.’s inadequate climate laws.  Progress we make in B.C. now can set a powerful example that inspires greater climate ambition in other provinces, and crucially, at the federal level.

As a government relations specialist with our climate team, you will design and deliver an effective government relations and stakeholder engagement strategy to secure a strong, enforceable climate law in B.C. — charting a blueprint for success we can replicate during the lead-up and aftermath of the 2019 federal election.

  • Design and lead an effective B.C. government relations strategy to:
    • Make climate change reporting and accountability a government priority,
    • Build cross-party support for climate legislation in the legislature,
    • Raise awareness of the importance of law in securing long-term climate outcomes based on global best practice, and ultimately,
    • Secure an effective and enforceable Climate Change Accountability Act and appropriate regulations.
  • Lead on the delivery of government relations and stakeholder engagement activities that build awareness, influence decision-makers, and shift political opinion
  • Brief politicians on key components of Climate Change Accountability Act.
  • Convene knowledge-sharing events with stakeholders, including health, youth, small business, organized labour, and Indigenous groups.
  • Work with a multidisciplinary team of lawyers, campaigners, and communicators to respond rapidly to real-world events and leverage those moments to move Ecojustice closer to the agreed objectives of our climate change program.
  • Build relationships and coordinate activities with partner organizations and allies.
  • Represent Ecojustice among external partners and within coalition spaces to further the goals of our climate change program and the organization.
